I’m really pleased to be hearing this dialogue, it’s well overdue and I hope it prompts further discussion. Great to see some honesty regarding where Australia is experiencing some problems about its engagement with Art. I particularly enjoyed the comparison with Japan’s exhibition audience. I have been a practising artist for about 30 years and I think this is the first time I’ve heard this kind of scrutiny. There is a great deal of frustration felt by artists out here based on conversations I’ve had with other long-term practising artists. We are witnessing the gradual erosion of the Arts and these kinds of forums bringing the various elements of the Visual Arts together is crucial if we are going to have the industry survive. Thanks to Artist Profile for promoting this event, we need many more of these discussions on a more widespread scale if anything is to change..

Great to have this discussion (any discussion actually) about the practice of art, about the taboo subject of judgment, value and taste and its relationship to art institutions. Artists just work on through, but its good to feel part of a cultural context after all. I liked Idris Murphy taking issue with ‘interesting’ and pointing up the danger of nihilism. Also Ruth Waller talking about judgments below the level of language, and a whole body response to making. The revelations about the way art institutions’ judgments are made, may not surprise many of us but the honesty of the disclosure surprised and delighted me. Thanks to Joe Frost for his editing and summing up. Thank you Artist Profile for a really good issue.
